"The 'real' in art never dies because its nature is predominantly spiritual."   --Hans Hoffman

Sarah Bolek’s art emerged from her experience of everyday life.  Art was her spiritual path.  Hers was the journey of an American artist whose creative language allowed her to cross cultural barriers to give visual expression to the common threads in all human life.  Until her death in 2012, Sarah remained passionate in her quest to express truth. Her work expresses her personal experience of a woman alone and  in relationship to "other" -  as a daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and wife.

This is a posthumous retrospective intended to celebrate Sarah Bolek and make available the body of her work for family, friends and others to enjoy.  The images are of work (mostly acrylic paintings and works on paper) that is in the possession of family and friends or held in storage.  It is roughly divided into three periods: California (Bay Area) in the 1950’s and 60’s, Mexico (Mexico City and Guadalajara) in the 70’s and 80’s, and San Antonio, Texas in the 90’s until just before she died at 89 years old in 2012.  Click on the above images to access selected works from these three periods.
